Why Specializing in Blonde Hair Was the Best Business Decision I Ever Made
There was a moment in 2019 when I looked at my booking calendar and felt completely exhausted.
I was a good hairdresser. I had loyal clients. I was busy - always busy. But I was doing everything: cuts, color, quick treatments, brunettes, blondes, twenty-minute appointments back to back. I was earning decent money. But my back was tired. My brain was tired. I was always running late, and two clients were always watching the clock before I even finished the one in front of me.
That is not a business. That is a very demanding job you gave yourself.
In 2019, I made a decision that changed everything. I went all in on blonde. Only blonde. No more quick cuts, no more generalist bookings, no more filling the gaps with whatever walked in the door. I would become the specialist - the person hairdressers and clients came to specifically because of blonde hair.
At the time, people thought I was limiting myself. I thought I might be too. But I was wrong.
The Life I Was Living Before
I had always been happiest on the days when blonde appointments were on my list. Since 2009, those were the days I actually looked forward to going in. But the reality of working in a high-volume salon meant that a three-hour gap in my calendar would fill with drop-in clients before I could close the booking, and I don’t even think I was allowed to do that anyway. One cancellation would become nine clients in the same window. Nine(!)
I loved the craft - all of it. Precise cuts, a perfect fade, a perfect regrowth match. But I hated having clients in the chair for so short a time that I never got to know their personality. Small talk only. What do you do for work, the weather is nice, see you in five weeks. I was becoming more machine and less exceptional.
The contrast was impossible to ignore. On days with two blonde appointments, I loved my job. I had time - to do the work properly and to actually get to know the person behind the hair. I could make a real difference. On the days packed with quick treatments, I felt like “just a hairdresser”. On the blonde days, I felt like I could genuinely shine.
The money was similar either way. But the quick clients cancelled easily - because nothing magic was happening in thirty minutes. I was chasing two hundred clients a month just to maintain the same income as forty loyal blonde clients generated without the hustle. And my craft suffered. The time pressure got to me. Quick clients were not willing to pay more for extra time, while blonde clients happily paid for every extra minute it took to give them the most beautiful hair they had ever had.
I had always been more theoretical than creative - I loved the chemistry, the technique, the precision of it. Blonde hair gave me all of that. The quick in-and-out work gave me none of it.
The Decision
In 2019, I decided to fill my calendar exclusively with long-term blonde clients. Not to announce it dramatically - just to make the practical reality of my booking so full that there was simply no room for drop-in cuts anymore. I did such a good job on my blonde clients that they stopped cancelling, because the calendar was so full that losing a spot meant waiting months to get another.
Gradually, I worked more independently. I studied blonde techniques internationally - took courses, attended masterclasses, collected the best from each and built my own signature approach. I felt ready to go fully on my own: set my own prices, my own hours, my own standards.
And then, in 2021, my Instagram account was hacked.
The Hack That Became a Turning Point
It sounds like a disaster. And for a few days, it felt like one. A significant number of followers were gone overnight. People I had spent years building a connection with, just gone. I felt completely lost - like I had lost a piece of myself.
But then I saw it differently.
If I was going to rebuild a strong position, I did not need the followers I had collected over ten years by being everything to everyone. I needed to attract only the people interested in blonde hair. So I opened the account @blondebycatharina and started from scratch - posting only tips, techniques, and insights specifically about blonde hair. Deliberately. Precisely. So that every new follower was exactly the right person.
And since I was rebuilding anyway - I removed all other services from my booking, raised my prices by fifty percent, and offered only the @blondebycatharina signature blonde.
It was very un-Norwegian to niche down that completely in 2021. Most stylists I knew were doing the opposite - adding services to grow.
The clients came. And they were the right clients.
What Specializing Actually Unlocked
When hairdressers started seeing my work and my results, they got curious. They started asking how I was doing it - the techniques, the approach, the business side of it. That curiosity became demand for courses. I created my masterclasses and started travelling to teach. When there was not enough time to teach and work in the salon at the same time, I built online courses. I went from a sole proprietorship to founding Blonde by Catharina AS. I started branding properly - sharing everything that made me good, not holding it back.
Today, BLONDE Studio Oslo is home to some of Scandinavia's best blonde specialists. It is not just a salon - it is the physical base for everything I do. The space where I hold my in-person masterclasses. The office where I run my online business. A place that exists because I committed fully to one thing and refused to be a little bit of everything.
My education business has grown well beyond Norway. The Scandinavian Blonde Method™ is now taught to hairdressers globally through online courses - and this year I step onto an international stage in front of 1,200 hairdressers from across Europe and beyond.
And along the way, I became the Norwegian Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional - one of the most recognised brands in the professional hair industry worldwide.
None of that would have happened if I had stayed a generalist.
What This Means for You
Specializing is not about closing doors. It is about going so deep in one direction that you become genuinely irreplaceable in your space.
The clients who matter - the ones who stay for years, refer their friends, and never ask you to compete on price - are looking for an expert. They want someone who has committed fully, who knows more about this specific thing than anyone else they could go to.
That is not something you are born with. It is something you choose.
I chose it in 2019. I chose it again in 2021 when it would have been easy to rebuild as a generalist. Every time I made that choice, it paid off in ways I could not have predicted.
If you are thinking about where to take your career next - and you already feel that pull toward blonde hair, that sense that these are the appointments you actually look forward to - I hope this gives you something to think about.
And if you want to go deeper on pricing your blonde services - calculating your base price, setting premium rates, positioning yourself accordingly, and communicating it to clients with confidence - the Premium Blonde Pricing course covers exactly that. Five modules, thirty minutes, and a clear system you can implement immediately.
You already have the skills. Start charging for them.
